“Awareness and competence of fire safety technology are important for graduates of any engineering department who work in the building sector, whether as architects, firefighters, or building permit officers. They are closely related to public safety, especially for those living in urban and rural areas prone to fire problems.”

Biography

Dr. Yulianto S Nugroho is a Professor in the field of Fire Safety Engineering (since June 1, 2009). From then on, he constantly promotes public awareness of the importance of safety, health, and fire environment from design, construction, and operation to maintenance. Furthermore, through his daily educational and research activities, he strives to increase the role of Universitas Indonesia through integrated fire safety research activities at the national and international levels.

He gradually prepared the development of an innovative performance-based fire safety technology from 2001 to 2007 by researching self-heating and ignition, including the development of fire calorimetry. From 2008 to 2015, he studied compartment fire and smoke spread experimental and modeling, fundamental water-mist fire protection systems, and human behaviors in the fire. Afterward, by 2025, he will have focused on an integrated study on the smoldering combustion of peat, prevention, and suppression methods. His research aimed to better understand fire and smoke behaviors on a façade and in a basement fire.

For almost two decades, Fire Safety Engineering Research Group at Universitas Indonesia has nurtured and strengthened its research and educational cooperation with various national universities in Indonesia and prominent international universities, fire science communities, professional societies, and policymakers at the national and community levels. Moreover, the group has also provided technical assistance to public construction projects, industries, and the public in general. These activities continue to provide opportunities for the students to broaden their knowledge of fire risks. Yet, in many intelligent ways is improving public safety and welfare in the life cycles of a building, industrial facility, infrastructure, and the environment.
