In the future, by just pressing the flying mode button, we can make this beautiful sports car fly by itself. It will be that easy.

Profile

The Future Is Today: Flying Car

A roadable aircraft or a flying car is designed as air-and-land transportation, a combined airplane and car. Although generally designated as a flying car, this personal air vehicle is an aircraft specifically designed to operate on the highway; moreover, it is shaped like a sports vehicle. Dr. Mohammad Adhitya, a licensed private pilot, was interested in supporting this innovation in the automotive and aerospace fields.

Future Alternative Transportation

Taking into account a lot of traffic jams and congestions in big cities, we expect that a flying car as a personal air vehicle may serve as an alternative solution to those problems and serve as a future means of transportation that people will benefit from due to its faster traveling time and ultimate time-saving. That flying car’s operating system was designed so efficiently that it would later be easy for the driver to operate it directly either on land or in the air with the help of its autopilot system. Its technology and engine capacity are currently not really supported the actions yet since it is such a challenge to realize the beauty of the design and aesthetics of this future vehicle. Many people hope that not only will a flying car be technologically qualified, but its design aesthetics will also be much like a world’s most renowned sports car. This flying car will target a specific market segment; it will target those wanting to have one step ahead by owning a very sophisticated and unique vehicle in the world.

Not a New Innovation

A flying car has been many innovators’ idea and dream for such a long time; since the twentieth century and developed since the late 1930s. However, a flying car resembling a sports vehicle that we understand in general has not been materialized yet in this country. We can only see flying car innovations in several countries, such as Aeromobil from the Czech Republic, Terrafugia from the United States, and Carplane from Germany, currently in their airworthiness certification. A flying car shaped like a world renowned sports car will be coming soon to Indonesia.

Sophisticated and Flexible

A flying car excels in its flexibility. For instance, if a person in Jakarta wants to travel to Surabaya with his flying car, he simply gets off his garage, goes to a specially-designated road, makes his flying car take off, and flies. When he arrives in the air of Surabaya, he lands his flying car, travels overland, and arrives at his destination. He then parks his flying car in that garage. This flying car is designed with an autopilot flight control system, so the driver does not need to be a pilot first in order to fly it. Challenges in designing this flying car within certain respects exceed challenges in designing an airplane taking into consideration its shape that will resemble a sports car that, at the same time, has two wings that can be folded and stored and its aerodynamic characteristics and weight distribution. Those aspects mentioned above are mandatory requirements enabling this flying car to fly.

Global Synergy

With various companies worldwide developing it, a flying car will someday become a product that can be marketed to consumers around the world. Therefore, it is crucial to nurture a strong collaboration between industry partners and the universities to design a flying car. Flying cars’ technology has been developed at the Research Center for Advanced Vehicles (RCAVe), Universitas Indonesia’s latest vehicle research center. To make this program sustainable, we need to synergize with other industries to play their roles in marketing and sales.
