To ensure the development of society and innovative fire safety technologies, it is crucial to enable the implementation of the next-generation performance-based standard towards a more significant contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
Dr. Yulianto S Nugroho is a Professor in the field of Fire Safety Engineering (since June 1, 2009). From then on, he always sought to make the public aware of the importance of safety, health, and environmental protection, ranging from design, construction, operation, maintenance, and fire science and technology. Through his daily educational and research activities, he strives to increase the role of Universitas Indonesia at both the national and international levels through integrated research activities in the field of fire safety engineering.
He gradually organized the development of an innovative performance-based fire safety technology from 2001 to 2007 by conducting research on self-healing and ignition, including the development of fire calorimetry. Then, from 2008 to 2015, he worked on compartment fire research, smoke spread experiment, and modeling fundamental water-mist fire protection systems and human behaviors in the fire. Afterward, by 2025, together with his colleagues and his students, he will have focused on an integrated study on the smoldering combustion of peat, prevention, and suppression methods. His research also aimed at a better understanding of fire and smoke behaviors on a façade and in a basement fire.
For almost two decades, the Fire Safety Engineering Research Group at Universitas Indonesia has nurtured and strengthened its research and educational cooperation with various national universities in Indonesia and various prominent international universities, fire science communities, professional societies, and policymakers at the state to municipal levels. Moreover, the group has also provided technical assistance to public construction projects, industries, and the public in general. These activities continue to provide opportunities for students to broaden their horizons on fire risks and many smart ways to improve public safety and welfare in the life cycle of a building, industrial facility, infrastructure, and the environment.
Quote:
“Safety is all about understanding the limits. Awareness and competence in fire safety science and technology are important to graduates of any engineering department to work in the building sector, as an architect, in the fire department, and as a building, permit officer working closely with stakeholders of the building sector. They are closely related to public safety, especially to those living in cities and rural areas susceptible to fire problems.”
