Biography

Dr. Arif cares about developing an energy-saving and environmentally safe port. Increased flows of containers in the trading world are gearing a container port into the concept of “a Green Port.” The study aimed to achieve energy efficiency in each container transport facility. Energy efficiency can reduce the direct impacts of emissions from the port’s environment.

“Green Port Initiative” aims to develop port technology for energy efficiency and to reduce carbon emissions. The results of creating this “Green Port” technology have been widely applied in many developed countries. The governments, industries, and academics are implementing it.

The “Green Port” concept encourages a container port to use electrical energy in the operation of its transportation. The findings of measurement that we conducted at Hakata Port with a 910,000-TEU capacity showed us that energy consumption was mainly distributed in the reefer storage yards, gantry cranes, and tenant electricity. Based on the data distribution, the container port managed its energy by developing a technology to reduce energy consumption in its reefer storage yards and by making operational arrangements for its gantry cranes to evenly distribute the peak loads over a determined and limited time.

Automatic Retractable Roof Shade is a device installed above the reefer storage yard to reduce heat exposed to its refrigerated containers (reefer containers). Since the heat in the refrigerated containers is declined, it will save electrical energy consumption. This device works automatically; moreover, it can operate in the port’s control room. This device has effectively reduced the daily total energy consumption by around 7-14%.
