Safety is all about understanding the limits. Awareness of and competence in fire safety science and technology are important to graduates of any engineering departments working in the building sector, as an architect, in the fire department, and as a building permit officer working closely with stakeholders of the building sectors since they are closely related to public safety, especially to those living in cities and rural areas susceptible to fire problems.

Prof. Ir. Yulianto S. Nugroho, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Profile

To ensure the development of society and innovative fire safety technologies, it is crucial to enable the implementation of the next-generation performance-based standard towards a more significant contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

Dr. Yulianto S Nugroho is a Professor in Fire Safety Engineering (since June 1, 2009). He always seeks to make the public aware of the importance of safety, health, and environmental protection, ranging from design, construction, operation, maintenance, and especially fire science and technology. Through his daily educational and research activities, he strives to increase the role of Universitas Indonesia at both the national and international levels through integrated research activities in fire safety engineering.

FSERC UI

He gradually prepared the development of an innovative performance-based fire safety technology from 2001 to 2007 by conducting researches on self-heating and ignition, including the development of fire calorimetry. Then, from 2008 to 2015, he conducted researches on compartment fire and smoke spread experimental and modeling, fundamental water-mist fire protection systems, and human behaviors in fire. Afterward, by 2025, together with his colleagues and his students, he will have focused on an integrated study on smoldering combustion of peat, prevention, and suppression methods. His research aims to understand better fire and smoke behaviors on a facade and in a basement fire.

For almost two decades, Fire Safety Engineering Research Group at Universitas Indonesia has nurtured and strengthened its research and educational cooperation with various national universities in Indonesia and various international prominent universities, fire science communities, professional societies, and policymakers at the national and municipal levels. Moreover, the group has also provided technical assistance to public construction projects, industries, and the public. These activities allow students to broaden their horizons on fire risks and many intelligent ways to improve public safety and welfare in the life cycles of a building, industrial facility, infrastructure, and the environment.
